PIKA Radiological Brokering
Radiological Waste Brokering and Remediation

Under this contract, we have performed a wide array of hazardous and radiological waste services at locations in the US as well as in other countries.

Low-Level Radioactive Waste (LLRW) program management office for HQ Joint Munitions Command (JMC) – Rock Island Arsenal, IL, manages Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contracts for the procurement of investigation, excavation, identification, removal, remediation, transportation, processing and disposal associated with low-level radioactive, mixed, and hazardous materials and wastes.

We have been awarded numerous delivery orders under these IDIQ contracts to characterize, package and transport radiological waste both in the Continental United States (CONUS) and outside the Continental United States (OCONUS) to Government approved disposal facilities within CONUS.  Many of the projects are associated with low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) and mixed wastes (MW) and include radionuclide identification, hazard identification, packaging and shipping of LLRW and MW; providing services to solidify liquids, treating to remove, or stabilizing radioactivity and other contaminants; waste, soil, air, and water sampling and analysis; risk assessments; preliminary assessments, site inspections, remedial investigations and feasibility studies, deconstruction, demolition and excavation; and radiological surveys (consistent with the MARSSIM guidance).

To achieve the objectives of the various scopes of work, we begin by providing a considerable amount of operations support for various environmental and radiological projects worldwide.  We perform projects involving radiological characterization, packaging and disposition of radioactive material including sources, separation of radioactive penetrators and penetrator fragments from firing ranges, packaging, transportation and disposal of radiologically contaminated soils, radiological surveys and packaging of battle damaged tanks and vehicles.  Our OCONUS work includes many projects involving radiologically contaminated equipment and soils, hazardous wastes, and explosives.  We recently completed the Udairi Range 8A Maintenance project in Kuwait where we provided radiological support for conducting radiological surveys and the “spot and remove” operations during which DU fragments were removed from the range soils.

Over the last few years, we have performed radioactive waste brokering projects across the Pacific Rim, the Far East, and the Middle East (in addition to the broker runs in the US).  We were most recently awarded the Japan – Forward Repairable Inspection Activity project for providing health physics contamination surveys and decontamination efforts on aircraft and ship components potentially contaminated from fallout, which occurred during the Japan Fukushima reactor accident in March 2011.  Under a separate contract, we are tasked with the disposal of aircraft engines contaminated with radiation, which required DEMIL.
